LLOYD, Alice

Mrs. Alice Lloyd, the frail Boston Yankee who forsook a socially prominent heritage in 1916 to spark an educational revolution in the isolated hills of Eastern Kentucky, died Tuesday, September 4. She was over 86. She was buried on a hillside overlooking one of the 20 schools she founded in this region. Her grave is next to that of her mother, who accompanied Mrs. Lloyd to Kentucky in 1916. "It was a simple service, in line with her wishes", explained a spokesman for Caney Junior College, one of her schools. Mrs. Lloyd was the founder of Caney Creek Community Center at Pippa Passes in Knott County. She educated thousands of Eastern Kentucky youths, who but for her vision, courage, and stamina would have walked the path of ignorance that she abhorred. Although Mrs. Lloyd shunned publicity most of her life, her activities in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky have become common knowledge in recent years. A book written in 1954, "Stay On, Stranger", and her appearance on the national television show "This is Your Life" interpreted her struggles and Caney college to millions of Americans. In her lifetime she personally raised more than $2,500, 000 to support her unusual college on Caney Creek. She built the buildings with the help of students and people along the creek, using rough mountain timer and native stone. Big Sandy News, September 13, 1962
